NaN is an independent company founded by NeoGeo co-owner Ton Roosendaal.
The company maintains the current Blender releases and is responsible for all future development.
NaN's first activity was publishing the Blender manual. With the manual, Blender V1.5 was released in november 1998.

Press releases
  • SIGGRAPH 1999.
  • General NaN information.
  • User reactions.

  • Commercial Strategy
  • Blender was initially published as a freeware gift to the worldwide computergraphics community. The reactions at this release were so positive, NaN was founded to continue maintainance and development of Blender.

NaN's primary goal is to make a free software package, and make revenues with specials such as manuals and CDROMs. However, the decision to sell software Keys to active Blender users was a necessary condition to guarantee development towards the 1.8 release of Blender, the "Complete Blender".

  • Porting Blender
  • NaN intends to produce Blenders for all desktop systems.
Currently the C-sources of Blender are still NaN/NeoGeo proprietary. Blender versions will exclusively be maintained and produced in-house. Donations of computer systems are very welcome and will be rewarded with a native Blender version.
In the future a decision will be made whether to GPL the sources or to publish an open and flexible plugin API.

  • OpenGL hardware accelleration
  • Special Blender versions will be made as soon as OpenGL cards for Unix PC systems become available.

  • Blender 2.0
  • - GPL and/or plugin API.
    - Support for realtime animation design and 3D games authoring.
    - Freeware core with commercial additions for professionals.
